Sunshine Recorder

Sunshine recorders automatically registering time and duration of insulation are used at meteorological and climatologically research centers, observatories, spas and health resorts, in agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and vegetable gardening. The instruments are set up on flat roofs or on clear ground in such manner as to be well exposed to solar radiation, during the whole day. The type of instrument to be chosen depends on the latitude of the place installation. This recorder consists essentially of a glass sphere mounted concentrically in a section of a spherical metal bowl, the diameter of which is such that the sun stays are focused sharply on a card held in the grooves, in the bowl. Three overlapping pairs of grooves are provided in the bowl to taken up cards suitable for the different seasons of the year.

Technology:

The crystal ball is typically 10cm (4 inches) in diameter, and is designed to focus the rays from the Sun onto a card mounted at the back and is set on a stand. The card is held in place by grooves of which there are three overlapping sets, to allow for the altitude of the Sun during different seasons of the year. The recording of each day goes onto one card.In thenorthern hemisphere, the unit is set in a stand facing south to enable the maximum amount of Sun to be recorded. It is important to place the unit in an area where the Sun will not be blocked by buildings, trees or flagpoles.

A modification to the standard unit forpolar regionsis the addition of a second, north facing, sphere and card, to record the sunlight during the summer when itremains in the sky for 24 hours.
