Product Description

Cable measurements are performed whenever the stream or river to be gauged has flows that make gauging via the wading method impossible, impractical, or unsafe. The general rule is to avoid wading in the water any time the product of velocity (feet per second) and the depth of the water (in feet) exceeds 10 feet.

Need of Cable Way System:

A hand-operated cableway with a traveling block system has been used since 1977. The installation allows Hydrographers to safely collect stream flow and sediment data during high flow conditions when wading measurements are impractical or extremely dangerous. Because it is operated from the bank, the cableway system provides a safe, low-cost, and effective method to acquire stream flow and sediment data year-round. The hand-operated cableway is a safe alternative to manned cable cars at sites not easily gauged by boat or bridges during high flows.

Cable measurements are performed whenever the stream or river to be gauged has flows that make gauging via the wading method impossible, impractical, or unsafe. The general rule is to avoid wading in the water any time the product of velocity (feet per second) and the depth of the water (in feet) exceeds 10.

AUTOMATED CABLEWAY SYSTEM:

Automated Cableway System has been developed to replace manned cableways, thus removing the personal injury risk associated with this type of gauging. The standard Hornet can use an ADCP to measure discharge and the Hornet can use either an ADCP or a mechanical Current Meter attached to a suitable Gauging weight to measure discharge or Depth Integrating Sediment Sampler.

The Automated Cableway System has been developed to perform river and stream discharge measurements from fixed cableways using either conventional Columbus Type Gauging Weights and Mechanical Type Current Meters or Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). It is an ideal solution for retro fitting to an existing manned cableway system, thus minimizing the personal injury risk associated with this type of gauging.

Operation:

Automated cableway system operated through hand held remote wireless control unit from the bank of the stream. The hand held wireless remote unit incorporates the latest state of art electronics and Radio Controlled Systems.

The operator can move the Mechanical Current Meter by the push of a switch to traverse across the span to be measured. Once into position, the meter is lowered to commence measurement.

The Control System operates an electric motor fitted with incremental encoder to drive the carriage and hoist from the operating side to the far side of the river and back to the start point. The operator uses the Remote Controlled Hoist to raise and lower the Mechanical Current Meter into and out of the water.
